I'm trying to connect my linux box to the Internet, but I'm missing some info. Where do I enter the IP of my DHCP server? All the other info is set, but my eithernet card won't init, etc. because the names can't be verified. LinuxConf doesn't have any referances to DHCP.

You just have to set the adapter to dhcp instead of manual - setting the ip address of the dhcp server won't do much good because the dhcp server sets up your ip address and netmask that you have to have in order to speak ip
are you using dial-up or something else to connect?

In linuxconf, choose basic network settings. Select Adaptor 1 (if you only have one NIC), then click on the DHCP check box. Also enter eth0 for the network device and then the driver name (e.g., tulip or whatever your NIC requires). You don't need to put a host name in for DHCP but you might want one if you have a LAN and want to use Samba, NFS, etc. (e.g., mylinux.home).
Enter dmesg | grep eth0 to find out what your NIC is being recognzied as. Also use ifconfig to determine it the NIC is up (you should see "UP" in the third line of the output). Good luck. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yes, I know all that. I've got cable (COX@HOME) which is a LAN not dialup (of course.). I need to know where to enter my DHcP server's IP address. nothing in linuxconf relates to this besides the checkbox. Does this mean that I put in the server's IP in the Primary name/domain box instead of my machine's network name?

Are you talking about DNS? If so, then update your /etc/resolv.conf

No! I know where to enter the domains of my ISPs DNS servers. I don't know where to put the DHCP info. When I boot up, eth0 fails because it can't contact the DHCP server to get its info.

I have MediaOne, which is a re-branded RoadRunner here. This DHCP does a broadcast on FF.FF.FF.FF to get the DHCP server. This is done by the utility "pump", like this: pump -i eth0. After that pump -s produces useful information. Now, this is RH6.2, not mandrake, RR not Cox, but it MAY work the same way.

I have @home also. I didnt need to setup dhcp. Mine uses a static IP address. There is really only 4 Addresses you need. Host IP, Subnet Mask(This might be called something else in Linux), DNS, and Gateway. If you have windows on your machine, check for these settings and transfr them to Linux.

This is still not working quite right! I can see that data is being sent/recieved through my hub and modem, but Netscape and everything else will not connect to anything. It seems to be getting through, but the name servers aren't doing their job. I have the correct info in Linuxconf>Networking>Name Server spec. (DNS). What does "default domain" mean? I think that is at least most of the problem.

If I just know where to input this info, I'll be all set. Someone here was talking about a DHCP GUI setup frontend. Anyone know about this one?

'default domain?' Would that be your isp's domain name?
If so, then it goes in /etc/resolv.conf
domain yourispsdomainname
nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
You did say your resolv.conf was already setup, but I cannot think of anything else it could be.
Would you like the simple answer?
Linux Mandrake 7.1 distribution does not seem to have a DHCP cilent module installed by deafault. The eth0 error message you get on startup tells you that it "can't find a DHCP client", that should be on your machine.
From the K Desktop, open "DrakConf"
then open "RPM Package Manager (KPackage)"
then click on "open file".
for the file location, insert the Mandrake 7.1 distribution CD in your CD-ROM drive and type "file:/mnt/cdrom"
then browse to the file "/mandrake/rpms/dhcpcd - 1.3.18pl5 - 2mdk.i586.rpm"
then click "ok"
then click "install"
once that is done your DHCP client will be installed, and you will be able to use DHCP to configure your network adaptor from the @Home DHCP servers.
( I just went through this exact issue yesturday )

Bushwacker, thats what i did, except using RPMdrake and then it would crash on reboot. Please post if it works for you. Thanks!

Has anyone got this working, yet? I've spent many hours trying pump and dhcpcd with no success getting a dhcp address from mediaone. I will try to move the card to a windoze machine, bring it up, then save the settings, shut it down, move the card back to linux, and manually enter the stuff. My modem has been off all day, just incase that was the cause....
uuuk!
