Mandrake 8.0
US Robotics 3CP5610A 56k fax/modem
go to setup, ck modem query, everything ok
ck modem commands-ok
program says modem ready
enter terminal with connect to ISP-ATT.net
modem initializes, says ok
goes to setting volume level==EVERYTHING FREEZES!!!!!
TRY MINICOM -S
modem initializes--DEAD CURSUR!!!
Does anybody have any ideas. The modem is compatible with linux. :confused:
It could be that the modem doesnt use the same command to set the volume. Check your documentation and edit the commands in KPPP.
If not it could just be your modem. I had a modem with Linux compatible on the box but it never worked except to give me timeout messages.

You only have three speaker volume settings in kppp to select from:
M0L0 = Off
M1L1 = Low
M1L3 = High
Go into kppp then select Setup then Modem tab then Terminal. Type in the
commands below in bold, the response is normal text. See if one of the
volume settings is causing the problem. I have a modem that doesn't like
being set to high?
ATZ
OK
ATM0L0
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATM1L3
OK
Also select Log mode so you can see the commands that kppp is sending to
the modem.

For:slapnut
I did as you said. Entered ATz-ok, ATM0L0-OK,ATM1L1-ok, ATM1L3-error!! I looked at the modem commands and it had all three listed. What now, how do I determine why I'm getting an error? You can contact me directly at: chempro9@worldnet.att.net if you like. Thnx :D

You would have to consult the AT command set for that modem to determine the proper string for High volume, and I believe you can plug that directly into kppp. The work around of course is I would go to the modem tab and move the "slide bar" volume setting to the middle "Low setting. That should allow you to use your modem.
