I want to get my intellimouwe explorer(usb) workin in x windows (im using slack 7.1). I downloaded xfree86 4.01 and read the article on this site about getting it running. But is there anything I need to change to 'enable' USB?

thanks
paul

I have an intellimouse optical i just set up yesaterday.

get the latest 2.4 test kernel, and when you compile it you need to get anything mentioning an HID mouse - stuff in the input core section and the usb section. I'm not in linux so I couldn't tell you specifics, but there are like 5 modules you need, and if you look in the usb or input core documentation that comes with the kernel it will tell you how to make a special /dev device for your mouse, along with the names of those modules you need loaded, and how to set it up in the XF86Config file.

If you don't want to use a test kernel, you can use the USB backport for 2.2. Mandrake, Red Hat, SuSE, and a few other distributions include this (but not Slackware). Mandrake 7.2 works with the Intellimouse Optical USB out-of-the-box. If none of these suggestions are good, you can always use the PS/2 adapter, although the mouse may perform better with USB (I'm not 100% sure).

P.S. What interface do you like better: PS/2 or USB? What settings make this mouse work better and limit the jumpiness that it sometimes exhibits (which is my only problem with this mouse)? How are the IntelliEye mice?

I downloaded the 2.4test11 kernel but havent installed it yet, anyone have any feedback on these test kernels? Just want to see if its runnning good for folks before I do it.

I definitely want to keep the mouse USB thats how I run it in win98 and dont wanna keep switching it back and forth(i run 2 hard drives one win98 other slack 7.1) The only time I've ever seen jumpiness in it is once in a while when i'm not using it the pointer will sort of shake a little but nothing thats a big deal. It seems smoother and seems to respond a little faster than my logitech mouse man.

Probably the best part is no moving parts http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif I had to buy a new mouse pad since I had a white one (bought a black everglide giganta) I love it for playing quake III more than any other mouse I've owned. I don't really mess with any settings on the mouse. I havent ran the mouse in linux yet so cant say for sure how it will fare.

peace
paul
