The best way is to have you linux box be the router so you can firewall the hell out of it and not be worried of intruders.
2 nics in your linux box. 1 to the cable modem and the other to the win box. Use pmfirewall for the firewalling/routing and to be on the safer side use portsentry to help with the firewalling. And as always if first you dont succeed, post and we all shall try and answer.

The better thing to do is get an old 486 with about 16-32 mgs of ram anduse that as your router/firewall. Thats what I do, even though I am on dialup. But before I was demoted back to dialup and had cable modem thats what I did. It works great. It catchs those basturds even before they get in your network to compramise you systems. If any they only get the router and thats it, But even then they usually se nothing and leave if they even get in.

Just my 2 cents worth

yeah i figurd i would use the linux box as my router but now i cant even get that far because mandrake can't detect my network card.. its a linksys NC100 card (i did some reading and i believe its a tulip based card..). do i have to somehow disable plug&play ? ofcourse it said linux compatible on the box but no support or drivers...

any advice?

I don't see Linksys on the Compatible Hardware Listing: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fhard.php3
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif
www.linksys.com (http://www.linksys.com) only has Windows drivers/help specific to the NC100.

See http://www.linksys.com/faqs/default.asp?fqid=10
for their Linux support.

If I remember correctly their is a NHF on setting up a linksys Nic in linux. I think. But I do know that most all other linksys cards work with linux with maybe a kernel compile on some. But I do know that linksys NIC's are tulip based.

well, as it turned out, i returned the linksys stuff and got a netgear kit, which has FA310TX cards which are supported by Mandrake.. have not installed them yet but will see what happens... i figured its daunting enough being a newbie and trying to setup a router/firewall on the linux box AND having netcard compatibility issues on top of it.. =)

thanks for all your help!
