I am about to set up a second linux box.
the new set up would be like this:

Cable internet
|
|
(eth1 DHCP)
pmfirewall
crxxxxxx-x
rehat 7.0
(p133, 32ram)
(eth0 192.168.1.1 /25.255.255.0)
|
|
hub

hub ---- scott (win98se)

hub---- bev (win98se)

hub ---- NEW linux box

the new system will be a file server and general use computer. I want to know if there is a way to share the password files (samba, ftp, netaccess, etc..) from the gateway.

that way i only have to edit one set of files if i want a user to have access to the file server from the outside world (say by FTP) instead of on two different systems.

My totally lame way of doing it was to copy the passwd, shadow and smbpasswd files to the new box.

You could us NIS.
