hello.
I am a registered user over at HardwareCentral. I came over here to look around and because I thought I might be able to answer a few questions. (I use Linux alot)
I had to register for this site! Why? It seems that all these sites (Home | Windows | Linux | Hardware | Shopping | Web Building | Downloads | Tech Support) are affiliated, they certainly look and work the same.
If I am a registered user at one site, why am I not automatically set up for all the sites?
food for thought

most likely because it's much easier to set the servers up independently, stability will be better (ie if one server crashes it doesn't bring the rest down too if it buggers up the shared databases etc). And it'll be faster too because each site doesn't have to wait in line to access the database.
But then I could be wrong (and usually am) http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif

It seems to me (and I am a web designer/sysadmin):
assuming that each site a a separate database of userbames/passwords:
When a user is added on one site, just run a perl script to add him to the databases on all the other sites
or
have a script run that sycronizes all the databases once a day.
it'd be really easy...

You probably could, but one would have to ask whether the overhead and effort of coming up with a reliable syncronisation scheme is worth it. Most people only choose one or the other, then you get people like me who are normal users on one forum and a moderator on the other etc etc.
It's not too much hassle to register a few times and then save your details in cookies. I know it's not the best way of running a "farm" of forums but then the world was never meant to be perfect http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//wink.gif
