I've got Samba running on Mandrake 7.2 and I've configured it with SWAT and added a test user with the command "smbadduser test:users" and it can be seen on my microcrap network. When I try to access it from a WinCroaks machine, it asks for my username and password so I put it in and recieve this error message,
\\MachineName is not accessible.
The account is not Authorized to login from this station.I know I'm missing something here, but what?

Nice grownup title for this thread. :( People aren't going to help you when you ask this way.
Out of pity and to spare LNO any further discussion on this thread, here is a link to something I wrote: samba howto - supplement (http://yunt.net/network/samba.php)
1000's of people have it working, so it doesn't suck and it's not impossible.

What the he11 is your problem 4$$hole? I was just asking a simple question. I didn't realize that some people were so emotionally attached to a simple application. I will just make sure to not express how frustrated I am anymore, becuase I really get alot of help from you people that think you know it all. Why don't you step down off of that high-horse of yours and chill the he11 out? If you don't like my thread topic, then don't fuching read it buddy. I really don't want any help if it's going to be preceded by a morals lesson. :p

Nothing wrong with Samba. Only needs to be configured properly.
Since you obviously do not like Samba, is there any commercial packages available that can accomplish the same task?

samba is difficult to configure compared to alot of linux pieces/parts
being frustrated with samba is not uncommon, check the threads, there are many posts about "can't get samba to work"
u_m is just excitable by nature ( ;) ) so lets just see if we can solve the problems and in a couple days this thread will get pushed to the back of the line
BTW- many times when you get to the point you are at, ie can see the shared folder in winders, but it won't take any user/password combos, it is one of the following (only going by memory from other threads, i am not a samba guru by any stretch :p )
1-the winders pc doesn't have a "valid" linux user logged in correctly
2-the old encrypted/not encrypted password thingy
good luck u_m :)

Hey, Samba is confusing first time out so dont' feel bad. I hacked away at it for a while before the light bulb burnt out.
Try this on the Linux box:
smbpasswd -a username
where username is the same on both Linux and Windows boxes. You'll get prompted for a password. Keep things simple by making your passwords on both boxes the same.
After the error message (Samba doesn't see the smbpasswd file, thus causing an error message, and then, et voila, it's smart enough to create one!), you'll get confirmation that the user was added.
Make sure you have edited the smb.conf file to use:
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/smbpasswd # on RedHat it would be /etc/samba/smbpasswd)
That should get you up and running, assuming everything else in your smb.conf is okay.
BTW, once you get Samba up and running, I suspect you'll change your opinion to a more positive one. ;)

hmmm....lets see....
maybe if you started with a respectable question other than samba sucks...you would get more help. Why would you expect help from people that like samba, and have proven its worth, with a question like that.
That stupidity just blows my mind.

You can say that again. I have to sit here in the middle of this gigantic Micro$oft network with my single lonely little Linux box, trying to make it get along with all the others. I would have a more suiting job to my skills if Unix positions were open now, but they're not so I have to work in an MIS department. I used to work on Linux at IBM, now look at me. Office 97 and Windows 95. :p Maybe that's why I'm so irritable. no hard feelings?

that would give anybody grief, hey wait, i resemble that remark!
i asked my boss to switch my box from win95 to w2kpro cause it has been locking up frequently (surprise? NOT! )
two weeks later, no answer, i think that means no :(
so i hang in the test lab and load whatever distro floats my boat that 10 minutes! :D
