Question:

I installed Mandrake 7.2. I have a Diamond V550 TNT graphics card. While installing it had a blurb about either using XFree 3.3.6 (I think) with 3D support or 4.0 without 3D support but faster 2D. Funny thing though - both choices were still of the 3 variety (no 4 option). Can I assume that the Nvidia 4 version drivers were not included in the distribution and I'll need to install both XFree86 4 and the new Nvidia drivers? For that matter how do I determine what version of XFree86 I am running?

For further confusion - how does Mesa and the different OpenGL implementations factor into this?

Thanks..I'm trying to learn : )

Nope, no 3D for XFree86 4.0.1 were included. You have to do that yourself. (Just got it working.)

On the second question, I beleive the NVIDIA drivers and OpenGL implementation take over for Mesa.

What documentation did you reference?

How can I check the current X86free version?

Thanks for your help.

MarkUsG3 - Just the NVIDIA FAQ. That and a little putting 2 and 2 together like the renaming the mesa files while installing the NVIDIA drivers.

If you use KDE, you can use Control Center to find out.

BeardedDragon - We're always open to a little help. EvilSD is usually best to contact on that sort of stuff since he owns the site.
