pppd DSL patch failed

I'm not sure why but, my internet connection just up and died (this has happened before). Normally i would download the pppd source with pppoe patches included, and get it working. This time, when i try to run pppd, it says there is an unrecognised symbol in the plugin and stops, i've tried with multiple kernels, none seem to work. (trying with and without 'make patch-o-matic' for iptables).
I'm not sure of the exact error, something like uvar_something_hook. I'll find out when i get home (and am forced to use a win9x machine with a modem for internet connection :()

doh, i posted the other one first, but got no responce, since i would kinda like to get internet access again, i posted here. I'll delete the other now.

the specific error: unresolved symbol: recv_config_hook
a google search didn't bring up anything usefull :(

note: i wiped linux and reinstalled, hoping it would help. guess what happened :(. Well this doesn't fit here, so if anyone wants to keep reading about how screwed i am, they need to go to the networking forum.
