How about /var/log/messages? Poke around in /var/log, there is a bunch of stuff in there.

Did I do that?

But does for instance the secure shell daemon keep a log on all logons and where they come from?

I think /var/log/wtmp keeps a log of all logins.. and /var/log/btmp keeps a log of all failed logons.. I could have those reversed, or even incorrect.. If you log all logins the logs get big fast, I did that on my firewall for a bit.. Oh, and they don't log them as normal text, you'd use the last and lastb commands to check those.. If they don't exist, just create and the kernel should use.. bah..

Actually, the logfiles arekept in /var/log, but the ones you want are:

(telnet, etc.)
/var/log/secure

(ftp, etc.)
/var/log/xferlog

you can also check logins by typing:
(to show last ten logins)
last -10

(to show all logins)
last

also try lastb
but it seems most systems don't create that file, so you have to create it yourself..

anyways, hope this helps.
