I read somewhere that glibc was a replacement for libc, but it looks like some distros are still based on it. It even appears that some distros are based on different or older versions of the same libraries. Wouldn't it be easier to have them all based on the same (i.e. most recent) libraries? What am I missing?

Technological advancement!

Not everyone is going to advance at the same rate. We can't make everyone use the same libraries, but we can be backward compatable.
