Actually, this will make everything in X run a little faster, but at a price of dedicating more resources to X. All you need to do is renice your X server, be it X, a display manager like KDM, GDM, etc.
For example, assume the PID of KDM is 233, then just:
renice -10 -p 233
Also, make sure you have the latest versions of KDE and Konqueror, the updates always seem to speed things up a little. At this point, I'd say you can ditch Opera, especially since Opera's renderer is still rather buggy under Linux.
