After installing Mandrake 7.0, I tried to get my scanner up and running in KDE. I installed the xscanimage RPM which was on the Disk 1 install disk. After creating a desktop icon and setting the path to the program, I couldn't get xscanimage to run under mu user name. It would work OK as root, but when I changed back to user, it wouldn't do anything. As root I checked the properties, and made sure that owner, user, and group had execute permission, but still no dice. Finally, I opened a console as root, and did a chmod to allow execute permission to all. That did the trick. For some reason a number of applications must have the permission set by command line as root. The same was true when I installed xcdroast later.
If you have an application that refuses to work in a GUI environment, open a console and do a chmod to set execute permission.

Sounds like a bad RPM - submit a bug report to Mandrake if someone hasn't already done so. RPMs should set up most programs to be world-executable, IIRC...
