To turn the volume up or down you can just use the volume slider in xmms, the cd player or whichever program you are using.
If you want to control the master volume, use one of the mixer programs (au mix etc.). They are in the Mandrake menus under multimedia/sound.

from the command line run aumix to adjust the volume controls.
