Im using RedHat 6.1 (cant use 6.2 because of having an Athlon & had too many issues with RH7s compilers and Mandrake in general) and Im compiling the 2.4.0-test8 and 9 kernels and having problems with module installation. I have updated the GCC that ships with RH 6.1 to the RH 6.2 ver before compiling the kernel, or I get errors. The kernel compiles fine and the modules build appropriately, but depmod doesnt appear to ever modify the /lib/modules/2.4.0-test9/modules.dep file. I therefore lose alot of functionality. When I compile directly into the kernel instead of using modules, sound, etc works but certain drivers (like joystick) need to be compiled as modules to function.. any info on a workaround is appreciated..

Perhaps this is the solution?
