Ok, so I'm thinking about switching from Mandrake to Debian, but I don't really know how to do an install (I've installed Linux 3 times, but it was all graphical and simple). Anyways, people have been telling me about this "apt-get" command, but I have no idea how it works or what it does. So I go on debian's website, go to install instructions, and go to the link they posted ( http://www.debian.org/releases/2.2/i386/install )
Why is the text all messed up? I'm in Win98 right now on IE5.5 ... I don't get it, what's up? So, that being said, can someone explain the apt-get parts of debian? Syntax and stuff? It's potential sounds really REALLY cool, but it's no good to me if I don't know how to use it... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

This should get you started: http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/debian/chapter/appc_05.html
apt-get is simple though.
apt-get update -- updates the package info (what you have installed and what is available to be installed)
apt-get install packagename -- installs that package -- if it depends on other packages it will tell you what they are and ask if you would like to continue.
apt-get upgrade -- upgrades all packages existing on your system that can be upgraded.
apt-get dist-upgrade -- does the upgrade plus other things you may not have had installed before.
There are a great many other nuances to it. That's where some of the man pages and this site can help you out.
I hope that helps.

Debian doesn't bite (uhh, byte?), and if you're familiar with MS-DOS, then this will be a synch. When it asks you for hardware params, just let the modules autodetect themselves.
