I know this is supposed to be the How I Did It section; but, I just want to say I did it.
I downloaded Mandrake 7.2 on a dialup connection that seldom gets past a 28.8 actual transfer rate and never get past 33.6. With all the stops and starts due to just being disconnected from the ISP and the ISP occasionally just stalling, it took 147 hours to complete the job.
I have the first ISO already burned to a CD and have tested it. The second ISO will go on CD sometime tonight.
By the way, I used GoZilla.

I got the Mandrake ISO and burned it to CD within 1 hour. Sorry for bragging, but DSL is great!

Well, the reason I posted this was that it seemed a miracle that a download that took this many hours and had to be restarted a dozen times or more was even usable at all when it got here. People have written here and on other BBSs that such a huge download had a very slim chance of success. In my case, this is the fourth time I have done a huge download and the fourth time it seemd to actually work, my point being it may not be so daunting a task after all.
I know faster service is available and, if my cable company hasn't lied to me again, I'll have it in December.

My first iso d/l was in Windows and I used GetRight. 3 days later I burnt a CD, but it didn't work. I d/l it again and it worked.
Every d/l I do in Linux got here OK, but in Windows, I only had about 2/3 success.
I also connect at either 28.8 or 33.6.

Having the worlds crappiest modem connection at home, I never even bother downloading email attachments.
However, having phiber at work (shared with 3000 other users), I can say that getting ISOs from other .edu's on our same provider just smokes - Sometimes my transfer rate will push 2mb/sec.

I downloaded the 7.2 extention cd ona 56k frame relay line (only get about 4.5-5k/s d/l)
i got install cd at school on T1, but this cd tooke me 5days and 18 times resuming with getright.... no problems and it burned fine. i found that if you change the config for getright to rool back about 6-7k instead of the deafaul 2-3, you get a way better chance of getting a good d/l..
well good luck in the linux world!

In the linux world there is a great app called rsynch better than getright!
Plus Getright monitors and logs everything that you download! I don't know about you but I repsect my privacy! goto www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) and get optout to stop them and others from logging all the sites you visit and all of your personal information.

in defense of getright, version 4.3 is not spyware.
I do not know how to use linux good enough yet to download ISOs with it.
Gozilla however IS spyware. I go to www.grc.com (http://www.grc.com) all the time. have YOU read about nanoprobes yet?
I am right now using windows 2000 for productivity and when I have the time to learn I dual boot to mandrake 7.1 to learn it.
I downloaded the mandrake ISO from the internet, too. 33.6k modem, if you are wondering.
8pm to 8am auto dialup, download, then disconnect. Got it in 7 days. gotta have my phone line free for calls other than that.
cheers, all.

147 hours?
Wouldn't it have been easier to go to http://www.cheapbytes.com/
and buy the 2 Mandrake cd's for $4.00?

Hi All:
I am new to this list ... I got stuck with windows ME ... my wife supprised me with a
new HP computer this xmas and I do not have the heart to bad mouth it ... does anyone know if windows ME can be upgraded to windows 2k without re partitioning the disk .... ? I have Best Linux 2000 R3 beta on my old machine and while I am learning the sys admin stuff for linux I want to use win2k for its networking ability .... and since I already have paid Uncle Bill for ME I am caffing at the bit to pay him again for win2k ..... any help will be appreciated ...
Maybe someone might have an old hard disk they want to sell that might happen to have win 2k on it http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

Just FYI, I have used Gozilla for a download that took about a week. It burned and installed great.
In response to the guy who asked; why not buy the CDs? I bought a CDRW so I could make my own distro CDROMs to try for free. Besides, you might as well buy a package if you are going to pay shipping and everything.

I did almost the same thing but for me it was the ENTIRE install tree rather than the ISO's. At least I was working with ISDN but it still took me maybe only half your time.
