Okay, so I was using Xcdroast to burn something and I clicked on cancel. It said something about not being able to eject the disk unless I power cycle the drive. It wouldn't eject and I didn't want to reset. So I got a paperclip (you know they have those emergency eject thingies) and tried that. Well the tray only would come out about a tenth of the way and then the drive started making WEIRD sounds, so I finally reset the thing.
Well I can still load/eject cd's from the drive, however any attempts to read from the drive fail since it dosen't detect when cds are in it and thinks its empty.
Why do I do things that contrdict common sense?

well if u can't RMA it then u could get your self a nice 24 speed burner
NB
Hey, i had some similar problem with an old P133 =P
Don't worry, you can get it working again, in most cases.
Just play a bit with the eject button, try to "make" it read again. Youalso can open the drive (yes the screws =) and try looking what's wrong with it.
That's a common problem and easy to solve.

I paid 80 bucks for a new 8x Phillips burner which I think is great. So at least you didn't try something like cleaning the processor fan while it was running.
I have, not fun...

If you can't get it going again, I'll gladly take it off your hands. ;)

the other day I was working on the computer and went to the kitchen for brainfood(Jager-Meister)but i had left the cd-drive tray out. Walked by and knocked out the whole tray with a *Crack*. I thought it was toast, but seeing as regular old cdroms are pretty cheap, I tried to jam the tray back into the drive. It wouldn't go at all, so in frustration with this 20$ cd drive i slammed it in just to get it out of the way.Well it was closed now :p . it made all kinds of bad noises going back in so i figured it was definetly toast now. hit the eject button just to make sure, the tray pops out like it was on rails and faster than it used to as well. I guess you just gotta show the HW who's boss sometimes

I took the drive apart a few days ago in a desperate attempt to get it working. Well now the front bezel won't go back on and a weird black gear fell out of somewhere. The weirdest thing I actually managed to get the drive working again once I put it back together (minus the bezel and gear, of course). I haven't tried writing with it yet since the thing is from the dark ages and seemes to really hate these 80min cdr's that I have.
