Dr. Shim 07-27-2001, 01:05 AM As the title implies. evulish 07-27-2001, 01:35 AM  Debian  The best linux distro out there :) (That is SOOOOOO not arguable! :)) One of the more popular linux distro's for intermediate+ users. apt-get remove windows Strike 07-27-2001, 03:20 AM www.debian.org (http://www.debian.org) And yes, it is a very high-quality Linux distro that I would argue is the best one out there, and I've used most of the big ones and quite a few small ones. Dave2001 07-27-2001, 06:09 AM Yes it for sure is great . Even though i have not tried that much others ... i was in love with Debian right away . Mmmm... i dunno latly i see so much Debian threads all over the place ... hehehe i like that . David ronmon 07-27-2001, 08:01 AM Debian is the distro that is almost as good as Slackware :) Dr. Shim 07-27-2001, 10:32 AM Uh oh, here comes another dumb question from Shim...what is Slackware? Sorry I'm a newbie to this whole Linux world! I haven't even installed my distro yet! (O_o) Skroob 07-27-2001, 11:16 AM Slackware is another distro that has a fairly strong following. I hear it allows you to get your hands dirty more with the inner workings than many of the other distros, but I've never used it so take this with a grain of salt. My recommendation would be to try Slack, Debian and Redhat or Mandrake and see which one you like. They all have their strong points and faults. Of course, I've only heard of one person leaving Debian once they tried it and gave it a fair shot, but to each his own. Dr. Shim 07-27-2001, 11:20 AM Ok thanks. I have Mandrake, and I'm so excited about trying out my first distro! I'm gonna pee my pants. http://www.photovault.com/Link/Animals/Mammals/Primates/show.asp?tg=AMPVolume01/AMPV01P05_09.1712 optech 07-27-2001, 11:43 AM i myself tried debian... 3 times actually.. this last week i was using it... i kept seeing all these people saying "debian 0nz0rz0rdz!!" so i figured the only way to be 1337 was to use debian... well, i didn't get any 1337er!! infact, it made me dumber!! i'm reciting pi and some sine/cosine formulas now just to fix my brain... i'm going to have to use slackware for 8 hours straight just to get that horrible install screen out of my head!! :D btw, there was a lot of sarcasm in the post. but not ALL of it was sarcasm... Dr. Shim 07-27-2001, 11:45 AM ok, thanks for the help. I see now what it is. Its a distro that many people hate. So I won't get it. Dr. Shim 07-27-2001, 11:46 AM my goal is to have over 100 posts on this subject, so i said that. :D geekchic 07-27-2001, 01:37 PM Originally posted by Dr. Shim: ok, thanks for the help. They both require more time and knowledge than distros such as Mandrake and Red Hat. Many people use Mandrake and Red Hat as their first distro. After they think they have enough experience, they move to Slackware and/or Debian. I, personally, will be moving onto Slackware next, but that's because I'm a real "do-it-yourselfer" and I want to really understand how the mysterious Linux works. I'll probably move to Debian after that, to see what so many people are gushing about. :D Gnu/Vince 07-27-2001, 01:48 PM Originally posted by optech: i myself tried debian... It's a wonder how you learned cosines if you don't/can't even learn Debian evulish 07-27-2001, 02:11 PM  Debian  and Slack users are the most...uhh...whats the word...verbal...about their linux distribution. I mean, whens the last time you saw someone go  Mandrake  or  Peanut . Debian  Dr. Shim 07-27-2001, 02:13 PM We dont go  Mandrake  ...we go   MANDRAKE!!!  sincka 07-27-2001, 03:21 PM Originally posted by GnuVince: It's a wonder how you learned cosines if you don't/can't even learn Debian HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! ronmon 07-27-2001, 04:57 PM Cosines, as opposed to Debian, are logical. :) But before I start a war, let me say that Debian is an excellent distro. It's just not my cup of tea. I've run SuSE, RedHat, Slack, Debian and even tried Mandrake for a few months. Slackware is far and away the most "hands on" of all of them and that's why I like it. Mandrake is a good one to start with, but try out some others when you get a chance and you'll find one that suits you best. justlinux.com
