Hi,
I was panicing - I had installed 2.4.0 kernel but could not 'make' the alsa drivers/modules. I kept getting errors.
Simple way around this: go to www.alsa-project.org (http://www.alsa-project.org) and get the NEW 0.5.10a drivers lib and utils. These came out 7th January 2001 with the ne 2.4 kernel in mind. Then do
./configure
make
make install
for the drivers, lib, utils IN THAT ORDER! Then do
amixer set PCM 100 unmute
No need to do anything else!! If it worked before under your old kernel then it should work again if you followed the above steps. (well it worked for me, 2.4.0 kernel, redhat 6.1 XFree86 3.3.6, blah blah blah)
If you have never installed ALSA before then what I have descibed above will not go anywhere near describing to you the full process. Take a good hard read of their documentation.
Good luck!
