Oh wow I've discovered Apt and all I can say is KICK ***. I don't know if I really want to install slackware now http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yes, apt truely does kick ***. A reminder: always do apt-get dist-upgrade upgrade, not just apt-get upgrade. Especially if you're using development releases of software. IIRC, upgrade doesn't handle changing dependencies between package versions cleanly.

I try to avoid dist-upgrade except when upgrade will absolutely not work properly (which, sometimes is the case). dist-upgrade takes much greater liberties with dependencies, and can move easily remove packages -- which isn't always what you want. For full system upgrades, dselect is almost always a better option, because it gives you fine control of dependency resolution. I'd say use upgrade only when you need to upgrade in a hurry, dselect in most cirumstances and when upgrade won't work to your liking, and dist-upgrade only when upgrade won't work as you want it to and the dependencies get too complex to handle under dselect.

Hey craig, what would you recommend? I like stable, but I need 4.0.2 X... if I install unstable perl blows it up. Any tips?

Check that out... you can find info on X4.0 for Potato there.

Namely, the sources.list entry:
