does anyone have any experience with this sparc box? it looks pretty good at $1000.
any idea how solaris8 on sparc compares with linux? freebsd? (i've heard not-so-stellar things about solaris on intel.)
i'm new to linux (mandrake8) and have no experience with freebsd. just keeping an eye out for alternatives. heh, i'm still booting into beos > 1/2 the time these days...

Well I haven't tried it, but I'd have to say it's gotta be faster than Sol8 on Intel... <snore>... I'm using that little mix right now as I type this and it's frustrating as hek (and yeah, I think this is probably only like a 300mhz computer, IF that, but still it takes forever for everything).
Unless you have $1000 to burn, or have some real good reason to want to use a Sparc (such as career training) I'd probably be wary of spending that much money on an architecture that leaves you with so few OS options - Linux has nearly dropped it, not sure about BSD. So basically you can use Solaris or Solaris :p
And trust me, Solaris would not be my home OS of choice.

I know at least NetBSD supports SPARC hardware, and will for conceivably forever.
I don't know about linux "dropping" sparc, but i find that hard to believe, i've used various linux distros on several different (admittedly older) sparc computers, and all worked fine. i haven't seen any evidence of Linux moving away from sparc, but i haven't been following it much either.
If you like solaris, and it does everything you need (i.e. you aren't going to be playing lots of games, etc) there is no reason to not get the Blade.
but if you are just doing it to learn linux, i would be weary unless you have 1000 to burn.

OpenBSD and Slackware also support sparcs at this time.
