Brand new user
I am having problem with my video/monitor settings in GNOME.
I have had a few tips to try but the problem is the machine starts up with the GNOME GUI. But because I have a video probs and can't see the screen correctly, I am unable to make out the icons to switch to command line.
Is there a key combination at the login prompt to switch to text mode?

To get into the commandline just do the ol' three finger salute (Ctrl+Alt+Del or your backspace key). Then you'll be at the command line. The other way is to type 'linux 3' at the lilo prompt.

you can use ctrl+alt+backspace to switch from GUI to CLI and then ctrl+alt to switch from one virtual terminal to another or from CLI to GUI

if you would like to change this permanently or temporarily until you fix your video problems, edit your /etc/inittab and change the default runlevel to 3 (if running a distro similar to red hat)

The question is also answered in the FAQ's here at LNO. Good place to start for the new user and also have a look at the NHF's.
