did it crash when X tried to start up? I doubt very seriouslly that the X server that ships w/ solaris will support notebooks (check the HCL (http://soldc.sun.com/support/drivers/hcl/8/401/BOOK.htm)). You could try to install xfree, but that's a major pain (here's some tips (http://sun.drydog.com/faq/8.html))

Yeah, Solaris 8 is VERY touchy about hardware, apparantly even more so than 7.
For example I installed it on several clone PC's at work, but the install program freaks on my home PC, and on the Dell laptop I tried to load it on at work.
I haven't bothered to look for mine yet, but there's a hardware compatibility list at docs.sun.com you might want to check to see if your hardware is on the list.

It requires 64 mb minimum.
