What distro do i need for this idea. Network server/firewall, few site web server(low trafic) and port opening/closing/forwarding.
I will need the desktop installed (xwindow i think its called) and would like to use webmin and vnc server too. The firewall/port forwarding is the part that im worried about. Behind this server will be a win2k machine with nascar4 server, web server and pcanywhere untill i get this going.

Im a bit familiar with redhat 6.2 and 7.0 networking and pmfirewall but i need a dummies setup.

IBM - Pentium 166 w/64meg ram, 4 gig hard drive
Thanx for your time!

This is the NON-linux forum, you might be better off asking in the Networking/Security forum...

Unless you want to run BSD (hint, hint) as your firewall, of course.

You can use any distro you like. I've only installed PM firewall once but got frustrated when I had to go in and edit the rules it generated to better suit my needs. I wound up building the wall from scratch. (I know the PMFirewall setup is idiot proof, but alas I botched somehow it). If you want a quick and dirty firewall, PM firewall is for you. But if you truly want to run as many services as you propose, I suggest you get more intimate with the ipchains or iptable rules. Otherwise, debugging the firewall is going to be a nightmare. Plus its good for the soul. If I'm correct, portforwarding needs to be compiled into the kernel. I'm not sure if this is done on the default linux install. I'm also not sure if PM firewall does this for you, I don't believe portforwarding is part of the ipchains ruleset if I'm remembering correctly. You will need to use the ipfwadm rules (or something like them). If you want I can take a look at my rulesset at work and post what you need to know in oreder to portforward.

When I built my firewall I used this book: http://www.bookpool.com/.x/kd76j2jhy8/sm/0735709009

It will have everything you need to know to build a ipchains firewall. I found it a bit more readable then the HOWTOS and man pages. If your going to use iptables, I don't know what documentation to suggest.

As Solar suggested you should move this thread to another topic. You'll get far more responses there.
