I picked up The Complete FreeBSD from Barnes & Noble yesterday. I'd been wanting to try it for a while, but I was reluctant to give up Slack.
I'll post again once I'm up and running.
I bought FreeBSD's powerpack about 3 months ago and have been pleased w/ it since. I still have a Linux Machine (Debian), but I mainly use BSD. I hope you like it as much as I do http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

I have both FreeBSD and Slackware installed now. I'm using Slackware right now because I haven't figured out how to get the DCHP client working with my cable modem yet. I did find a URL for it, but it involves recompiling the kernel, so I'll do that later.
The install was not very painful (at least no more so than my first Linux install), but I tried to use XF86setup it hung up and I had to hit the reset button. Of course, my / directory was fsck'ed, so I had to reinstall.
More later.

It turns out that I didn't have to recompile the kernel because the option I needed (BPF) is now in the default kernel.
Unfortunately, DHCP to @home still doesn't work. (BTW I have Comcast@home, who requires a certain host name to be sent in order to activate the connection).
FreeBSD may have to wait for my DSL to come in. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

Hey Larry,
come ask your BSD questions at the BSDvault (http://bsdvault.net) message board; there's lots of links to BSD documentation and help files.

Thanks for the link! I've posted the question and bookmarked the page.

I got DHCP to work (my dhclient.conf file had the wrong interface), but now I'm having trouble with X. It freezes the computer when I start it. I have a 433 Celeron with an 810 chipset, but I use a S3 Savage4 PCI card, because the 810 wouldn't work with Slackware without getting a kernel module from Intel. I think BSD might be picking up both the 810 and the S3 card, creating a conflict.
Has anyone here had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it?
