Here's a little snippet from EFNET #freebsd from this past winter. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

<jhix> This isn't a help channel. Search the mail archives please
<chee> what is this channel for then?
<snaKmeat> wanking
<jhix> chee: for discussion of toon ferrets
<humbolt> jhix: thats besides the point. i still need help. Ive read the stupid archives. Ive re-compiled the kernel. i still can;t get it to work
*** ehg has quit (praise the lord and pass the ammo)
<X86BSD> then go back to windows
*** jhix- (jhix@user-33qtgut.dialup.mindspring.com) has joined #freebsd
*** jhix- has quit (Read error: 0 (Undefined error: 0))
<X86BSD> take nutropic drug injections
*** jhix-_ (jhix@user-33qtgut.dialup.mindspring.com) has joined #freebsd
<X86BSD> and when your IQ raises over 50 try again
<humbolt> X86BSD: Oooh, I've been flamed. I'm sure you're proud of how ****ing elite you are.
<humbolt> *****.
<jhix-> humbolt: that's not nice
<jhix-> humbolt: got any good bud?

#freebsd is filled with 'leet' *******s, sometimes they help, but the percentage is low...

<edit>sorry... #freebsdhelp is much better, however...</edit>

It really depends on the question and how you ask. If you make it sound like a rhetorical question, and don't say 'PLEASE HELP, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!, etc., people will be more apt to help out. Giving out info stating what you've tried and any error messages received will usually get some attention.
Try to ask your question when there is a lull in the conversation.

Use any EFnet server to get to the above channels.

I'm testing the X config this weekend.

Solarflux?

what is EFNEt? As unusual as it might sound I do not use IRC and have never used IRC and have been tought FreeBSD by myself for the past 4 years.. I know enough about it to hold my own in the forum.. how doo I connect ... Maybe I can rattle some elite fags feathers... Nothing to BSD really ... can you get me some instructions on how to connect to these servers? I am itching to see what is going on there!!!

Download the IRC Client of your choice...

Good ones are:

XChat (gui)
*****X (console/terminal)

If you're new to IRC, I recommend XChat, it's pretty easy to use. When you start the program, it shows a list of servers to connect to. There will be folders of servers, and one of them will be EFnet. Expand the folder and pick a server. Double click to connect to it.

Then once you have connected to a server, type:

/join #freebsdhelp

or any other channel that's available.

Then start chatting!

Some key commands:

/server (irc.server.com) - connect to a server
/join (#channel) - join a channel
/part - leave current channel
/nick - change your nickname
/me - say something in third person tense
(ex. SolarFlux spits on Windows)
/query (user) - start a private conversation
with another user
/away (message) - to announce you are away
/away - announces you are back
/quit - exits the program

Use TAB key for name completion when addressing someone in the channel.

The only downfall is that if you want to connect to two different channels and they are on separate servers, you must load two instances of your IRC client.

After you get familiar with XChat, you may want to try out *****X; it's more difficult to use at first, but gives more info regarding the status of the network and other users.

Come by #linuxsphere on irc.openprojects.net if you get a chance, I am there sometimes.
