I scored a free copy of Solaris 8 at the ALS, but when I run the install it warns me and says it must wipe out my first Hard Drive. WTF??

Is Solaris worth installing, or should I just keep my Slackware?

I am assuming this is X86 version.. not to rain on your parade but you can get it off the net for free now as well..

is it worth installing? Solaris is way cool.. I mean there is very little you cannot do with it.. especially 8.. I have been an admin for a while and moved to 8 recently and it is the best user version I have ever seen... check it out.. you got nothing to lose.. if you dont like it.. (this is not linux) then put your favorite os back on there.. let me know if you need any help..

please do tell how to get Solaris 8 for free! Every time I go over to www.sun.com (http://www.sun.com) to try to download it I find where they promote a 'free binary license' but require you to purchace a 'media kit' for $75 US plus shipping. Yea the license is 'free' but the media kit cost $75.

Solaris is super mondo cool, but I refuse to run it at home until they put the "top" command back in. ;^) Actually, I've been kinda thinking about grabbing an old Sun workstation off eBay and setting it up as a server. Anyone have a SPARC machine at home?

Is this thing really going to wipe my first drive clean if I try to install it? That is certainly what it says. I want to multi boot it with Win98/Win2k/Slackware/BeOS/Solaris 8 http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I don't want it to kill my winblows partition (i cant afford to lose the data, and i dont have time to reinstall)

I guarantee you that it will wipe your entire first drive.

So, I guess you're SOL then. Either get another box or bite the bullet and wipe out your first hd. Just remember that you need a minimum of 64 MB RAM or the install won't proceed.

One reason you may want to consider installing Solaris on x86, is to play around with it and then put it on a resume. Most of my experience at home was with Red Hat and I could not get a job being a former Truckdriver who knows Linux. But I could get a job as a Jr. Sysadmin being a former truck driver who knows Linux, but also has Solaris on the desktop.

Now I get to work with Ultra 60's and ultra 5's and one enterprise server. So I got rid of Solaris on my desktop and am now playing around with OpenBSD.
