In light of the advent of Apples new joke of an OS (X), and after evaluation of the public beta, I have decided that rather than disgrace my machine, the next upgrade I make will be to Linux. The only question is which flavor? I'm hoping to tap into to the experience of the users who post here to make suggestions and give opinions in order to help me make a more informed decision before I commit. Any help or suggestions you can offer would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I have also been a mac user for years and just moved to linux. PPC 2k is a good flavor that is fairly easy to install. What type of machine are you running? PPC will run on any machine that has a PCI bus, no nubus. Not too many people have that problem any more. Gnome runs slow on my machine, but that is probably due to the slowness of my computer rather than a mac thing. Other than that I have not had any problems with it?

------------------
Use mac for user friendlyness
Use linux for power
Use Windoze to appreciate the other 2

I have been very happy with YellowDog Linux. I also like the Tasty Morsels disc that comes with it.

If you go with LinuxPPC, don't install the language packages, and also change from the default Enlightenment WM to Sawmill or WindowMaker once you have it installed. there is a problem between Gnome and Enlightenment. There is also a time glitch in LinuxPPC, but it is very easy to fix.

The only problem I have found with YDL is X crashes in root if you let it sit there until the screensaver kicks in.

both are fine, but right now, I like YDL.

Sorry, i forgot to list my hardware profile in my first post-I'm running an iMac DV with 192 MB RAM. I have also found out that 2 major distributions, SuSE and Debian, have mac versions of their OS. Does anyone know any thing about them? Thanks again. (BTW alfredo, heard anything good or bad about the Gone Home version of YDL?)

Out of curiousity, why are you so down on OSX? I haven't had the opportunity to play with it myself, but most of the reviews I've read are pretty favorable (esp. for a beta). I know one or two folks who've bought the beta and I'm eagerly awaiting their impressions. It seems a great solution; a UNIX-style core with Apple's second-to-none interface. As I said, your opinion's your business (my G3 has a LPPC2K partition), I was just wondering.
