MacOS 8.6 vs. Netscape vs. too many bookmarks

Hey all, I know this is a Linux board ... but I have to ask. My wife is a professional web surfer and a packrat.... she's been on me to fix a problem she's been having lately. Some of her bookmarks are grayed out and the last 2 dozen don't work unless you go into the edit bookmarks section and click it there....
I've spent the last 2 nights messin with it (I use to work as a Mac tech and Mac network admin.... I also worked for Apple for a while)....
.... anyway problem found.... If I delete a chunk of bookmarks the ones that didn't work do now, so she must have reached the limits

Has anyone heard of this and is their a fix NOT involving getting rid of any of her bookmarks?

Try updating to the latest version of netscape (4.76 I think)

thanks... I posted the same question at Macfixit.com's BB and got the same response. I was trying to bring it up to version 6... but I've found out that the mac version is still in a world of hurt (I couldn't get it to see the contents of my wifes mail folders) and I didn't realize that there was an update to the 4.7x that I already had.
... if the upgrade doesn't work I'm going to try an applescript to switch between different bookmark files
