whats the deal with the dot matrix "look". i have installed the printer and it recognizes the epson 740, but when printing, it is in gray and dot matrix

Depending on what distro you are using and what your system is using to print with (cups or lpr+ghostscript) the resolution setting is too low and/or the dithering is not setup as per your liking.
Let me know what distro you are using and what the current settings are and let's see where we go from there.

Get printtool. It comes standard on RH systems.
It set up my 740 easily.
