Description of Problem:
I was messing with my settings in KDE 2 and now I can't get into KDE. To fix this, I attempted to type "linux 5" (without quotes) when I first boot the computer, and I get a message that says linux will only boot up in linux 3 (non-GUI). I tried to modify some of my files to get into linux 5, but Mandrake 7.2 won't let me, even when I am in root.

Questions:
1. Is there any way I can tell linux to start KDE 2 after I login in linux 3 mode?
2. After I successfully get into KDE 2, is there any way I can change my settings so KDE boots up automatically?

If there is anything you don't understand in my Description or Questions, please let me know.

OK - is Linux kicking you out of KDE or X? Run X -probeonly to see if it gives errors. If not, then to switch to X from a console, log in as root and type init 5 which should change you over to runlevel 5, which is normally GUI. Also, assuming KDE2 doesn't overwrite KDE configs, I think you should be able to change the kdm config files to allow you to select either KDE or KDE2 from the little dropdown you get at start.

That should be enough for now. HTH

Run X -probeonly to see if it gives errors.

I must admit I've never X -probeonly before, so I am not sure what an error would look like. It did not blare any error messages, though.

If not, then to switch to X from a console, log in as root and type init 5 which should change you over to runlevel 5, which is normally GUI.

I tried your suggestion; this is what I got:
________________________

[root@www/root]# init 5
INIT: switching to runlevel: 5
keyboard: Too many NACKS - noisy kbd cable?

Press <return> to continue.
INIT: Switching to runlevel: 3
INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal
[root@www/root]#

Questions:
1. What does an error on X -probeonly look like?
2. What is a "NACK"?
3. What is a "noisy kbd cable"?
4. Why can't I go into runlevel 5 where my X-windows managers are?
