For some strange reason and linux install cd's(best linux 2000 r3 and edesktop 2.4) fail to bootup from CD. I can install them after making a boot floppy so it isn't a big deal but I was wondering if anyone else has come across this or has any ideas about it.

Thanks.

you mean other distro's do boot on that PC?
if so it could be the media, how old is the cdrom drive? older ones don't read cdr media too well

or if you mean no cd's will boot off that drive/pc then is could be your bios, older bios's didn't support cd boot

or

if none of the above then, that sucks, must be a fluke http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

Let me give some more background on this.

I have installed and played with all current major distros on this machine.

Slack 7.1,7.0,4.0,3.5
Corel 1.0
Storm 2000 Hail,rain
SuSE 7.0,6.2,6.0
RedHat 7.0,6.2,6.0,5.2
Turbolinux Workstation 6.1,6.0,4.0
Caldera Edesktop 2.4,2.3
Best Linux 2000 R3
Mandrake 7.2,7.1,7.0,6.*
Peanut 8.1(small distro based on Slack)

All of the lilo based install cd's work like a charm. Only the 2 grub based ones puke.

My system:
AMD K6-2/500
Asus P5A Mobo with latest bios version
96M PC100 RAM
SB AWE64
Voodoo 3 2000 AGP w 16M
Panasonic 12x CDROM(hdc)
HP CDWriter 8250i(hdd)
2 IDE HD's,3.5 Floppy
Sparq 1.0 Gig external drive
Plustek USB Scanner

I don't want to switch the cd's around as I want to keep my use of the burner to a reasonable level for obvious reasons(way more expensive than a regular cdrom and a heck of a lot more usefull too)

That about sums it up!

I am sure the cd's are good as I burned multiple copies of edesktop 2.4 from separate downloads and all the checksums were fine.

You can install the OpenLinux eDesktop Binaries & Installation CD from Windows.
If the CD doesn't start automatically when you insert it, go to Start->Run and enter:
X:\winsetup\winset.exe
where X is your CD-ROM drive letter.

I believe I tried that way back when with no success as well. The only way was to install via boot floppy.

Thanks anyway!
