I've got an old IBM 701 CS laptop (50hmz processor, 32meg ram) running RH 6.2.

I'm considering installing some version of X windows. I've heard that blackbox works well for low-end machines. And it doesn't get much more low end than this.

Is Blackbox the way to go or are there any other windows managers that run fast and have a small footprint?

thanks.

Blackbox sure is a good choice. Small footprint, huh? Have a look at fvwm2. I can push it down to about 1100kB when I'm just running the basics. Besides that I feel the urge to promote the use of fvwm2 as I seem to be the only one here using it :D

Look's good (http://www.nord-com.net/goedeke/screenshot.jpeg), too (me thinks).

Hmmm...I'll check it out. What system are you running fwwm on?

I'll definitely consider it. Can you answer config questions if I run into anything?

Sure I can! There is a program called dotfile generator which lets you configure fvwm via GUI. I prefer to edit the textfiles, though. The syntax isn't all that obscure after all.

The system I'm running is somewhat more powerful. (500MHz Athlon w/ 256MB RAM). The most low end system I had fvwm2 running was a toshiba satellite PI 100MHz 16MB RAM. Sure it was slower than this one but it certainly was very usable.

If you decide for fvwm and run into trouble just post here or email me (the address is in my profile).

Give iceWM a go, too. Its very lightweight but quite powerful and easy to configure.

Back in the day (well two years ago) I had a 486 dx66 with 16mb RAM running fvwm2 quite nicely, it really didn't seem slow at all. I also had a 486 33mhz with 8mb RAM run fvwm2 and it worked slow, but not as slow as Gnome+Elightenment running on 200mhz and 32mb. I think Blackbox and IceWM Fvwm2 will all run fine. There is always twm too.
