I have RH 5.2 up and running. I am new to Linux so please don't laugh at me. How can I change the refresh rate for my display adapter running xwindows? I have messed around with linuxconfig, but I can't figure it out for the life of me! http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA......
hehe sorry... you were asking for it by asking people not to http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif
congrats for getting linux working, it's good fun trying something completely different once in a while.
I know how to change the resolution but I forget about the refresh rate. isn't there also a setting for that in the config file?
I should really get my debian system up and going so I can run linux all the time and give you a better answer http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif

BTW just thought I'd make it clearer I was only joking when I laughed at you... I'd only laugh at you if you tried linux and then insisted that Windows was faster and more stable http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//wink.gif

Ok, I don't know how to do it the pretty way, but here's the hackers way:
Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config
Look for vertical/horizontal sync/refresh. You'll see two values. The first one being the lower limit, the second being the upper. You can specify one value there, or a range of values pertaining to your monitor.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot, and if doesn't work, then I'll just have to kill you http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif
It is so nice to get help when you are new to something (like a ne OS.) Otherwise, it takes for ever to figure things out http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//wink.gif

BTW, if X decides it doesn't want to work, or freezes you, hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace to back out of X. That will save some of your strands of hair.

Oh, now you tell me...I had to reinstall twice, and I still can't get it to work right http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif I set the refresh rate, but the screen is not the correct size I want it to be. I can adjust it from the monitor, but then it is messed up in win98 and NT - does this make any sense? I guess I'll just keep playing with it - I am surprised I have gotten even this far. I don't have too much time now, got to hit the MS study books.

Make sure in the "Screen" section that your "Virtual Screen" and "Resolution" are the same you probably have the resolution set to a higher size than the virtual screen. That would leave alot of space around the desktop environment.

Oh, I see...
But I have to reinstall Linux again. I just formatted my system again(1,000,001 times now!) I got rid of NT slavestation, and now I only have Win98(one down, one to go http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif) on my HD. I am going to reinstall RH Linux and use LILO to boot between the two O/S's. I am just trying to iron out all the wrinkles...
Wish me luck http://discussions.linuxplanet.com//smile.gif
