Sorry if this has already been posted before.

I have downloaded KDE 3 for Red Hat, but am having difficulty installing it. I did exactly what the README said but still it doesn't work. When I try to install the individual RPM's it keeps coming up with dependecy errors.

Can anyone pleaase tell me how to install it.
Thanks

What errors messages/dependencies do you get?

The various *rpm* dependencies can be fixed by grabbing version 4 of rpm itself. You can get that from any number of places like rpmfind (http://rpmfind.net). Or you can have it ignore that dependency for now and go get the latest versio of rpm later. The biggest problem seems to be that RedHat's instructions don't quite line up with KDE's own recommendations. The KDE FAQ page suggests a specific sequence of installation. IIRC the arts packages first, followed by kdelib, followed by kdebase, followed by everything else except kdeaddons, then kdeaddons last.

On the other hand, it maybe that RedHat packaged everything so that the KDE sequence is not a big problem. In which case you can make note of the failed dependencies, re-run rpm with --nodeps, then pick up the pieces later by refreshing specific packages.

To your first suggestion I am unable to upgrade.........due to dependancy errors. (I am using the RPM binary version)

To your second suggestion, even when I try installing in that order I get dependancy errors.

To your third suggestion, I am a newbie so I don't feel confident trying that.

I am having this exact problem.

When I try to un-install, I get the same dep problems. KDE recomends that you un-install kde first with the command:
rpm -e `rpm -qa |egrep ^kde`

but this does not work. I've tried to force it with -e --force, but i get an error that says i can't use --force with an un-install.

Has anyone successfully installed kde3 on an rh7.2 system? please help and let everyone know how you did it.

I've seen this exact problem on other bbs, and there doesn't seem to be a clear solution as of yet.

Try --nodeps instead of --force with the uninstall.

Hello, I'm running Mandrake 8.2 and can't get KDX 3.0 to install, I'm a complete nebie at anything Linux (Thus why I chose to use Mandrake) And just can't get it to install...

I get a bunch of: blah <>=S 3.0 in needed by kdebase3-3.0-19mdk

some of the files it want are kdelibs3, libDCOP.so.4, libfam.so.0, and on and on

I know nothing of nothing, how can I do this?

I believe someone else just asked the same question (KDE3 and Mandrake 8.2) in one of the other forums just yesterday.

Hopefully those replies will help.

Other than that, try the Mandrake usergroups/mailing lists which are probably linked to from the main Mandrake website.

Another way to install the rpm's would be to use --nodeps though I really don't know how advisable that would be. It may not work or mess up your system.

Did you check the documentation at www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org) ??? Google searches???

Yes, I found it, they say to go here http://www.atechsol.net/kde3.html
Witch I did and got stuck at step 7 as I don't know where to get the files listed.

The files I need are mentioned at http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=028104
Maybe that helps?

Just today I installed Mandrake 8.2. I was using Redhat and just decided to try something new. So, I bought Suse 8.0. That was a big mistake... so I downloaded Mandrake 8.2 (my friend is buying my Suse discs off of me.)

Anyway, the main reason I bought Suse was because it was the only distro available at the time that included KDE 3.0, so when I got Mandrake I immediately set about looking into how to install it. I stumbled across this:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/mdk-kde3.0.php3

It doesn't get much easier than that, folks. I was up and running KDE 3.0 10 minutes after I started downloading all the files. And, I didn't even experience any of the bugs mentioned at the bottom of the page.

Ok, so I need to edit etc/inittab
...
# Run xdm in runlevel 5
# xdm is now a separate service
# x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
x:5:respawn:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm -nodaemon

But i can't replace the actuall file, and I can't go to the log in screen because it all goes black if I log out. And I can't edit the orginal file. How do I get around this?

edit(as root) your /etc/inittab file, look for area like "id:x:initdefault:" make sure it reads "id:5:initdefault:" This will start you with graphical login whenever you boot your computer. Select kde and login.

Too make kde your default, change the bottom of innittab file from "x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon" to "x:5:respawn:x:5:respawn:/opt/kde/bin/kdm -nodaemon". Be sure to check that /opt/kde/bin/kdm is correct, it may be different.

oh yeah I also had to edit my .xinitrc file to say "startkde" in order for kde to start automatically when I did startx from the console

I know that in most distros, kde3 installs itself neatly into /opt/kde3. In order for me to get it to run, I had to make sure that /opt/kde3/bin was a part of my path, then edit my /home/matt/.xinitrc file to read: "exec startkde3". When I did that, I could type startx from the command line and bam! Welcome to KDE3... bugs and all. After downloading the newer updates a few days after the release date, I was able to take care of most of the bugs. The only one still there is the Desktop Personalizer Wizard that pops up every time I start KDE.

(quote) The only one still there is the Desktop Personalizer Wizard that pops up every time I start KDE. (unquote)

look in /usr/share/autostart (based on Redhat7.2's location for it) and there is a link in there that points to that blasted desktop wizard thingy, delete that link and it will quit loading at boot\logon
