I have been wondering about this.
In CL, root privileges are required to shutdown. But when using Gnome or KDE, it seems that this is not necessary. Even when in the login screen (I think it's gdm in my case), there is an option to shutdown from the pull-down menu even without logging in.
How do I disable that? I do not want any user to just shutdown my box.

If you have YaST, there's an option hidden somewhere in System Security (I think). If not try the K Control Centre. There's an option to only allow root, or everyone, or local users only and one other I think. All regarding shutdown permissions.
Hope this helps

As Dave Long says, it's under the KDE Control Centre under Login Manager I believe.

I'm not running Suse so no YaST for me, I'm afraid. But is it me or what. I don't seem to see any options in the Control Center for KDE and GNOME to disable shutdown for normal users. I've looked around the options in there before posting.
Is there any config files that I can edit to do that?
Thanks for your help guys :)

You could also change the permissions on /sbin/shutdown so that only root can execute it, and you might have to do some trickery to get ctrl-alt-del to stop working as well (editing /etc/inittab, or editing sys.c in the kernel source and changing C_A_D to 0 and then recompiling the kernel, or maybe both I don't know)

Hmm... I'll try that out... after I take a nap... just back from a snorkelling trip... *yawn*
Thanks for the tip!! :)

I haven't used KDE in a long time, but I think there's a program called "kdmconfig" or something that starts with "kdm". Just type "kdm" and hit TAB a couple of times and you should get a listing. It will allow you to set whether or not anyone can use shutdown.
