hello,

a few months back, i had read a security paper concerning backends in lilo. i think it mentioned options to bring from boot, the bash prompt so that one would not have to enter a pass for root. anyhow, i need this now, i changed the password on my home-server which is home to my allmighty mp3 collection. after changing the password, i logged out, and attempted to log back in, only to be told the Crypt0 option not supported? perhaps besides supplying me with lilo info, someone might have an idea what went really wrong on my box?

thanks much, andrew

I believe it works like this:

at the lilo prompt, type this(replacing 2.4.6 with whatever you call your default kernel)

2.4.6 init=/bin/bash rw

then when its done loading you're root, type passwd and it will allow you to change the password. You'll want to reboot, because you can't do much else when you boot like this.

This isn't really much of a security risk, because it requires you to be at the computer, and reboot it.

You could just mount the hard drive in another computer and copy the files over. But then you'll have to reformat the computer.
