Ok, I configured (or tried at least) XF86 and thought I got it working right. I tried startx but I got 'No core pointer' which I think means I set the mouse device wrong.

I came back to windows to look it up (since my NIC driver isn't installed since I can't compile it :/) Then I rebooted to linux and the boot process got stuck when it tried to start the XFree font server (xfs) because I updated to 4.1.0.

Is there a key binding that would allow me to skip the process or edit what starts before I boot, since I can't actually get to the console.

after you get to the prompt, try running XF86Setup again.

to get to the prompt:

Ok, I hit 'i' and it did nothing. I remember that only worked on my redhat 6.2 distro and I've never seen the message to press 'i' for interactive mode again.

Any other ideas?

Could I change my runlevel to bypass most excess startup procedures and go straight to the console?
