Xsecrets 07-05-2001, 08:10 PM no and no. MandK_10 07-05-2001, 08:19 PM OK this may sound a little rude, but... If you have become smart enough to try Linux and have the desire to move to better things, why the heck would you still be using AOL. AOL is for newbies and button pushers. Linux is beyond that kind of mentallity. But if you insist on believing the AOL is 'kewl' you will have to continue using windows. Most of the 'local' type $18 a month kind of ISPs have no problem handling a linux machine. Mike crazyox2 07-05-2001, 09:14 PM aol is teh win for my mom Derango 07-05-2001, 09:25 PM AOL uses a propritary system in order to connect you to their service. As such, unless AOL opens their protocols (Not going to happen), you will be unable to access AOL from linux. However...you could get a cheap local ISP and switch to the bring your own access plan. That way, AOL and the new ISP will just about equal the price that you were paying for AOL before. That way, you could still use AOL in windows, and in linux, you can use the aol e-mail through their web page. However...I still reccomend dumping AOL completly. Its large, slow and a memory hog. godot 07-05-2001, 09:31 PM I don't think it's at all appropriate to call him a "stupid newbie" simply because he's asking if he can still use AOL. This is a forum for newbies and they should be made to feel welcome. madlinux 07-05-2001, 10:12 PM i am gettign rid of AOL, im waiting for my cable to come through but until then im gunna keep aol. and to the people that called me a linux newbie no **** sherlock why do you think i came to linuxnewbie.org!!!! dean772 07-05-2001, 10:18 PM spininternet.com is like 15 a month which is pretty cheap and they are good Tfortysix 07-05-2001, 10:22 PM I might be wrong, but as long as you can get a nameserver address from your ISP, you should be able to use it, right? Haven't used dialup in a couple years, so could be very, very wrong!! demetrius 07-05-2001, 10:29 PM Originally posted by Tfortysix: <STRONG>I might be wrong, but as long as you can get a nameserver address from your ISP, you should be able to use it, right? It even installs its own Network protocol in Windows. Yet another reason why AOL is a bloated POS. By the way, welcome to LNO madlinux! :D FunkSoulBrother 07-06-2001, 12:32 AM Trying to make the move over to linux, and well, I am a current AOL user. For the topic poster, you can still acess AOL netmail at AOL (http://www.aol.com) on any internet connected box. I would be happy to move on to a new ISP, AOL is expensive, and a little bloated. (though i do like the interface). My main issue is: I travel alot, and AOLs biggest strength is probably that you can dialup locally because they have placed access numbers in every podunk town in the whole USA. I need to be able to connect. Is there a linux capable ISP that has as many (or at least a lot of) dialup numbers which i can use around the country? There very well may be, so dont flame, i just really havent looked into it. Btw, i'm from North Dakota, so it has to extend a little beyond major cities. They're a big ISP so they probably have a dialup number in you area. Also it's really easy to set up an Earthlink account in Linux. All you need is the nameserver addresses your username and the dialup number. Cuthbert 07-06-2001, 02:00 AM Hehe.... read this: http://www.osopinion.com/perl/story/11362.html Matt G 07-06-2001, 02:15 AM AOL isnt even a ISP, they are an internet Gateway. SO its alot different. Ever tried to play an online game using AOL? Notice how your ping, latency is about 300+, but that guy who uses a dial up ISP has about 200-250? Yeah, because AOL isnt the same. Sure it SEEMS the same, but they are completely different. So to conclude, AOL sucks, ISP Dial ups suck, my cable sucks, i need a Gigabit connection to be happy :) sincka 07-06-2001, 02:24 AM GO AOL!!! j/k aphryo 07-06-2001, 03:32 AM actually it would be nice to see ANYONE compete with MS. Even if it is another evil entity. The nice thing that it would do would be to show linux to the mainstream point and click public, and probably get a lot more apps ported for it, and get a lot more kids learning linux, which would really benefit the future of linux. I personally think both of those companies will end up eating each other in the end and people will get sick of it. AOL has enough money behind them to really put a dent in MS's business strategy. I would much rather see the "less computer orientated" public using AOLinux then MSWindows. Try IBM. Strike 07-06-2001, 09:11 AM People, please reserve the personal attacks for: a) people who aren't asking honest questions b) other forums like rants and off-topic c) other boards in general, as personal attacks in general are supposed to be disallowed I already deleted one post, and there are a couple more that are definite candidates for deletion in this thread. Sorry it took me so long to catch them. Play nice.
