Right. I've seen this posted for various distros...I've searched high and low...but no answer.

Q: I upgraded Gnome using Helix auto-update, and everything went wonderfully. Exiting back to the login Manager (in Mandrake 7.2), there's suddenly no Gnome option. How - either through KDE or another WM - can I insert this option again?

But wait, there's more: I've seen people post how you can go into the Control Panel in KDE, goto System/Log-In Manager and enter "Gnome-session". However, this doesn't mean anything...all it does is put a phrase that X can't recognize (ie "Gnome-session") into the drop-down box in the Log-In Manager. When I choose this option, it goes to Icewm.

What I can't seem to find is the bridge between just typing the phrase "Gnome-session" and the Log-In Manager actually knowing (through some sort of config file) that this is supposed to go to usr/bin/gnome-session.

Also: tried creating a file in my home folder called .xinitrc, as well as .xsession (as per previous suggestions to similar questions). No luck.

If anyone can solve this puzzle, I'd be one grateful penguin-hugger.

Thanks in advance,

Matt C.

To have Helix Gnome show up as an option in kdm, gdm, you'll need to create a file in the /etc/X11/wmsession.d/ directory called 02gnome.

Open the file you just created with a text editor and cut & paste the following text into it:

NAME=Gnome
ICON=gnome-wmsession.xpm
DESC=Gnome Desktop Environment
EXEC=/usr/bin/gnome-session
SCRIPT: exec /usr/bin/gnome-session

Then reboot the computer for the changes to take effect, that's it.

Gdm Users

If you use gdm, not only will you need to create the file above, but you'll also need to type from the command line:

cd /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions

chmod +x Gnome

This will make the Gnome file executable and you'll now be able to start gnome.

Hope this helps.......

Dearest friend,

Thanks. It works now :)

Considering the amount of posts on this subject, you should seriously consider submitting this as an NHF.

This has been driving me mad with Blackbox for days, five40i you are well and truly the man! BTW, is there a convention to the numbers at the start of the file name or are they arbitrary?

Do you mean the numbers that are in front of kde, gnome, windowmaker, etc in /etc/X11/wmsessions.d. I really don't know what the numbers are for I can only surmise it is the order they are in the menu???????
As for the tip on getting gnome to start, I found it at http://home.tampabay.rr.com/jandr/Mandrake.htm
there is also a few good tips at http://www.pclinuxonline.com.......
I think you could find some good tips at these sites for Mandrake 7.2......

G'Day.....:-)

dam, and just after I reformatted, actually I formatted so I can dual boot with Win98 again, I loved having 100% Linux but for next few weeks gotta work out of an ACT program so I can get into a good college. Then its gonna be 100% Linux again, though I may try Slackware this time, or some other distro, maybe multiple... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum1/HTML/014449.html
