I posted a message like this a few days ago. I was told to try pmfirewall. It uses ipchains,(dont know what doesnt), and is very easy to setup. Just answer yes or no.

For Slack, I really like gShield and the gui config tool created for it - gshieldconf. Both available from linuxmafia.org I think.

I dunno how all of the other tools work, I actually got my first proxy firewall running by buying the Linux Firewalls book and writing an ipchains script from scratch. Then I realized the book contained a URL to http://www.linux-firewall-tools.com which has an online app that will create the ipchains script customized for your network. It's very good, and the most flexible option I'm aware of. My firewall is going strong, I love it, because I hardly ever have to pay any real attention to it. Just monitor logs.

I just setup Bastille Linux firewall last night. I was impressed.
