Hi I am running RH 7.1 with KDE2.1.1 which has Kdevelop 1.4. I wanted to upgrade to kdevelop2.0 which requires kde2.2. I downloaded all the files from kde.org (binary rpms). When I try to install them, I get dependency errors for a lot of libraries. I tried finding the libraries usinf rpmfind.net and when I install them they are conflicting with the older versions of the same libraries which are needed for ruuning my older version programs. For example, to install kde2.2, I get the error that "librpm-4.0.3.so is needed for kdeadmin-2.2-3". I found the rpm on rpmfind.net that has this lib, and tried installing it but get this error "librpm.so.0 is needed by kdeadmin-2.1.1-3" and some other programs too. This happens with a lot of other libs too. I thought this might be becasue of my running kde while performing this operation. So i did a switchdesk to gnome and I still get the same errors. I am totally confused  betweeen the dependencies, its like a bowl of spaghetti. Any one who might have a success story or idea about how too go around doing this????Please let me know of the source to find required files. Detailed response would really help me.

Thanks

Dependancies... one more reason to use Slackware.

When I was using RedHat, I had a lot of dependancy problems, and I fixed them with Ximian Red-Carpet. Go to the Ximian FTP, download ONLY Red-Carpet (unless you want Ximian GNOME). Install that, and then use it to install your KDE RPM's. It SHOULD resolve your dependancy errors... if not, then I can't help you :P. The easy way is always the best way ;)

I followed the advise and installed red-carpet. Well, actually, I wasn't able to install red-carpet just by itself but I thought I would try the Xinian desktop anyway, so I installed it. That happened without a problem. I am not sure how to subscribe to kde channel so I chose to install kde form the same files I downloaded using red carpet. It STILL giges me same dependency problems. ???? I am back to square one...

Hmm... I've never tried this myself, because I hate KDE with a passion. But it was worth a try ;). I guess Red-Carpet hates KDE too, so it won't help you ;). Sorry it didn't work :(

Now its really messed up. I am unable to log back into kde. When I use switchdesk, I do not get an option to log into kde.

This is not good..

There should be a setup thing on gdm that allows you to add KDE to the menu... if there isn't just log into a failsafe xterm and start KDE from there.

Where? How? Sorry for asking such dumb questions but all I have ever used is KDE.

Thanks

gdm is the login manager that RH uses.

Well, I have been able to somehow restore my KDE. Now how do I install just the red carpet rather than the whole ximian environment? Appreciate all the help you have provided. Thanks
