Okay I tried to look for this information on this and other sites so please reframe from the RTFM. I did see one thread on this board but it looks like the thread was eliminated.

Anyhow, when I startx, the message returns that they cannot find the file /etc/X11/X.
I am using debian woody on a toshiba laptop.

Also, could someone tell me what is the usual procedure to do once debian is installed. Do I try to get xf86 up and running first or do I try to get an internet connection going first in order to apt-get my files. I have Craig's sourcelist, but I think I have everything on the 5 Woody CDs. I am using the apt to update.

Is there a Debian manual with all this stuff someone can recommend? I have gone to the Debian website and have read all their faq and stuff, but I just need something for Debian to help me pick what packages I need in dselect. I am all about efficiency so I want to know what packages are small, fast, and gets the job done. I know so far I want blackbox as my win manager and vim as my editor. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance!

You probably haven't installed xserver-xfree86. I went through the same exact thing yesterday as I built a new box.

You should use dselect instead of apt-get its much more powerful and easier to use.

I had to do this: ln-s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 /etc/X11/X I think I got xserver-common,xserver-xfree86,and xfonts.

Is symlinking the way to go with this? I do have XF86 server install so I will try this. Can anyone give info to confirm the symlink? Thanks

Xfree86 and X need to be symlinked.
