I'd like to try out KDE2. Is the QT version found at the KDE ftp site (in the src directory) all that's needed to compile KDE2 myself? The FAQs and documentation at the KDE site are a bit confusing http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

And btw, have any of you tried KDE2? Is it good, bad, unstable? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

I believe you need QT2, kdebase, and a few other things. If you have enough hdd space and a fast connection, just d\l them all http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I have neither a fast internet connection or lots of harddrive space (I only dedicated 2 gigs to Linux, but that'll change soon http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif) plus they charge us by the minute for both the phone and the internet connection over here http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/mad.gif

Anyway, I downloaded QT2, kdesupport, kdelibs, and kdebase, compiled and installed them, and everything works. KDE2 rocks! Although it's a bit buggy right now (I can't select a screensaver without the KDE control center crashing on me, etc), but I suppose they'll have that fixed up in the stable release of KDE2.

Why don't you report the bugs? Hey instead of compiling why don't you download the package? like if your distro is Redhat get .rpm or if you are using slack get .tgz It's a lot easier to remove if it isn't stable. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I _have_ reported the bugs. And precompiled binaries are for wussies http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif The screensaver thing was my own fault, by accident I removed the screensavers (but I have no idea why it the control center crashed on me just for that...).

What seems to be the latest beta? I get confused trying to navigate KDE's site... I finally figured out how to install 1.94 off of the Mandrake 7.2 beta3 CD. Is this the final beta?? Is there some sort of Release Candidate floating around somewhere?

Any help (esp. direct links) for anything above 1.94 would be greatly appreciated...!

TIA

Release Candidate 2 just came out yesterday. Apparently RC1 was not publicly released. The final version is due out in a couple of weeks.

ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/distribution/unstable/RC2
or something like that
or http://master.kde.org/~bero/rc2 for Redhat RPMS
