Hey guys,
Im a linux newbie, well sorta but in anycase I want to use Xwindows over the internet from home. At home i use X-win32 and use XDM to query the server. That works fine and I get a login in screen. From work or an outside address I dont get a login. For reference my linux box is also my gateway/mail server/ftp/web yada yada. I I dont have any security on the box and I allow all hosts to connect(got to fix that soon). Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

I believe you would need a registered static IP address to accomplish what you want. Also have a look at VNC. http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/

You might have to give permission. I think you run "xauth add <client>" or soemthing. I did it way back when I ran LICQ from the computer labs, that was fun. I planned on doing Starcraft under WINE at some point. That will definitely raise some eyebrows I think http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif .

Search (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/search.cgi?action=intro) this forum (and others) for "remote X session", because I'm pretty sure I've given detailed descriptions for stuff like this before.

I tried VNC. Maybe it was the computer I was using to test it but it was slow. Still, it's as close to a free X server for Windows as you can get.

Thanks guys,
I got it to work by dialing in to my isp, I guess its something to do with the lan at work. I tried vnc which for me atleast seems alot faster then Xwindows, but I also want to run it on my Win98 box, I configured linux to forward tcp/udp ports to my pc and I get a password prompt but it fails.
Actually I also have pcanywhere and VNC is infititely faster. Im not sure why anyone would use pcanywhere to tell you the truth It looks like it was coded by a five year old.

As always there's never ONE answer to any issue. SSH2 and it's brethren offer remote X in a totally transparent and securely encrypted method. You don't have to "do" anything but connect, SSH2 makes X stuff available by "magic". http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif I have never done this with a 'Doze client, but, have read that they are available. With cable on both ends, and compression activated, it's almost like local loads. HTH, Ray
