I have absolutely no trouble installing Mandrake 7.2 into a logical drive in an extended ext2 partition. But upon reboot the machine will start booting linux (I think) and stall. It displayed the message: "stage1" and after it stalled. Any suggestions?

when I try to boot from the floppy created during the Mandrake install, I get the following messages:
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=08:12, iso_blnum=16, block=32
kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 08:12
