I installed slack 7.1 about two months ago and I still can't get Vim or vi to work correctly! Here are the problems: in vim when ever i press on of my keyboard arrows in command mode it prints a letter instead of moving up or down etc.. Then in vi I can't delete things! Whenever I press backspace nothing gets deleted until I move the cursor, then sometimes it won't let me delete anything. I keep pressing backspace while but nothing happens. This truly sucks because back in mandrake I loved vim and vi, they were so fast and truly a joy to work with. ARGGG! but now I have to fight it to get it to do anything or else I have to go into pico. Can someone please help me? PLEASE!

Both are normal.

For Vim:
add the following line to your .vimrc
set nocp

For vi:
Get out of insert mode and use X

I suggest you just use vim since it's MUCH better than the original vi or some clones (nvi, elvis-tiny, elvis, stevie, etc.)

Kickass! Thanks man, you were right about vi, so I created a symlink in /usr/bin and now whenever I type 'vi' i get vim instead. Thanks again!
