I know it must be expensive to do the work of developing new distribution releases and making them easier to install. I went to my local computer superstores to check out the new releases of Linux using the 2.2 kernal. I have Redhat 5.2 and thought the install was downright easy. I then bought SuSE 6.0 about a month ago. It was a little less friendly, but not bad.

I got to the store to check out RH 6.0 and SuSE 6.1. I was shocked to see a $79.00 price tag on RH. I bought SuSE 6.1 for $29.00 and got it up and running on my new PII450 (my god it rocks, this thing is fast!!!!!).

I don't want you guys/gals to think I'm cheap, my wife and I single handedly pulled America out of the recession in the earily 90's with our spending, and were doing our best to keep the current economy afloat. But RH is getting up there with MS pricing.

Has anyone tried RH 6.0, is it worth the $$$$.$$? Other than kernal 2.2, is there any advantages to buying RH 6.0 over buying 5.2 and upgrading the kernal? Let me know.

You do not have to buy an expensive full version of RedHat 6.0.
You could download it from the internet.

This would take a while but would work out less than the prices you are talking about regardless of what your internet charges are.

Or you could buy a GPL free license version from [url:http://www.lsl.com/] or a similar vendor for about $5 including delivery

You should never buy distributions from stores. RedHat 6.0 is free for download, and it's only $6.99 at www.cheapbytes.com (http://www.cheapbytes.com) You're paying for the book (which is on the CD anyway) if you pay the $79.99 pricetag. For $6.99 at cheapbytes you get RedHat6.0 and about 2GB of additional archived software.

Thats good info. I've never shopped at cheapbytes, I'll check them out. I hope to get a cable modem within the next month or so. I'm going to set up a proxy server with wake on lan and wake on modem. Downloads will be more feasable then. I've seen other listings for RH 6.0 for around $40.00 so I don't know whats up with CompUSA.

SuSE 6.1 seems to work pretty well, I'll probably get RH 6.0 from cheapbytes just to check it out.

Thanks again.
