I had no real problems installing my sound card (a Sound Blaster PCI 128). Gnome desktop sounds are fine. I've installed RealPlayer and listen to live365 with Netscape. My card is happy, Gnome is happy, RealPlayer is happy.

So why is KDE so quiet? I've "enabled" the sounds, but pressing the Test button gives me nothing. Under Information, the Sound section has nothing. It says something like either there's no sound info to be had, or it's info they don't recognize.

How can they not recognize a Sound Blaster?

Any ideas?

Same problem here, but with a SBLive! Anyone have any ideas? AOL Instant messenger is just as quiet...

KDE has a sound mixer program called "kmix" It might be useful. Try that http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

MisterJerk I think there's NHF for getting SBLIVE to work under linux.

KMixer would work just nicely, if KDE made any noise at all to begin with...

CD's and MP3's play just fine, but KDE system sounds and AIM sounds dont come through at all.

The SBLive NHF says nothing about this.

Have you checked the FAQ's and other documentation at www.kde.org (http://www.kde.org) ? I seem to remember seeing something about enabling sound in KDE, but I must be wrong as it must have been the first place you checked.

From the KDE Faq:

"6.8. Why can't I get system sound to work, like for opening windows?

System sound currently does not work on non-FreeBSD and non-Linux® systems. This is being worked on. If you use FreeBSD or Linux®, you have found a
bug, so please report it."

Screw it, I just installed the latest version of Helix Gnome/Sawfish. I like it better, and the sound works...

when I first installed kde2, (compiled from source no less http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif ), I got no sounds either. however, I just installed xmms and all the stuff xmms needs or stuff that would make using xmms cooler, then it was all good!

after i installed xmms 1.2.3, libmikmod and mikmod, and some SDL stuff (can't exactly remember all the files needed for SDL), sound now works peachily in kde2!

http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

but ask me WHY it works...actually, i could tell you why, but i'm just being lazy to go and find out why...

(mind you, you don't need xmms to make sounds work in kde2, just mikmod maybe and definitely the sdl stuff which allows the playing of two wave files at the same time which is how i can hear an incoming message sound played in licq while listening to my fav mp3s in xmms!)
